What is Ekoa® Surface?

We call it wood without trees. It's a surfacing veneer made of natural flax fibers and plant based resins. Ekoa® is also a biocomposite which is a fancy term that describes composites made from plants.

What are the dimensions?

Our standard size is 96” long by 20” wide. Thickness is about .02” depending on the backing.

How is it packaged?

Ekoa® Surface comes on rolls in boxes about 12” in diameter and 24”. We can fit up to four lengths in one box. For more than four lengths, we will ship in a new box with additional shipping expense.

Can I purchase less than the minimum?

We have a sample kit available for purchase, and otherwise offer Ekoa® in eight foot strips.

Can it be used for exterior applications i.e. outside?

While very resilient, we have not designed Ekoa® Surface for outdoor applications but rather for indoor applications which are less exposed to extreme weather.

Does it need to be sealed?

Ekoa® Surface features an in-laminate hard-coat which acts as an effective moisture barrier for regular use throughout the home and office. The edges should be sealed after trimming, though if using Ekoa® with flexible paper backing, the adhesive also serves to seal.

How do I install this?

We have different options depending on your project. If you want to avoid glue, we offer a Peel N’ Stick option. For flexible paper backing, we recommend using a standard wall covering adhesive, such as ‘Roman Clay’. For casework (cabinetry) and bonding to substrates, we recommend PVA, though consistent pressure is needed for a quality bond. See how-to-videos below and documentation to learn more.

Where is it made?

Ekoa® is manufactured in the USA. Our input materials are sourced from the US, Canada and the EU.

Where should I install it?

You can install Ekoa® nearly anywhere wood or laminate is found today: walls, ceilings, tables, headboards, beams etc. Ekoa® is not currently designed as flooring (not that it wouldn’t work! we have not tested for that application yet!)

Can Ekoa® be used for renovation and new construction?

Absolutely, and depending on the application we likely have a solution for you! Get in touch with any questions about your project!

Does Ekoa® take stain or finish?

Ekoa® is pre-finished with a durable plant-based coating that does not stain. However, It can be refinished, if necessary.

Can I sand it?

Ekoa® is not designed to be sanded as it has a pre-finish which could be compromised as a result.

If I order multiple strips, will they be seamless when installed?

Yes, when installed correctly, each strip of Ekoa® will blend seamlessly with the next to form a beautiful, non-repeating surface.

What is the difference between the backing materials?

The 3M Peel N’ Stick has an adhesive backing, requiring no extra adhesive. The flexible paper backing is designed to be bonded using wall covering adhesive, wood glue, or your laminate glue of choice.

Is it removable?

The Peel N’ Stick is not designed to be removed but if you choose to use your own adhesive the product may be removable, depending on the type you use. For instance, some wall covering adhesives are reposition-able, at least initially.

How is Ekoa® cleaned and disinfected?

Ekoa® Surface can be cleaned with regular household cleaners (including ammonia based products) and is bleach-safe. Isopropyl alcohol also works well, whereas acetone is not recommended.

Can it go around curves?

Ekoa® can bend around a minimum of three inch diameter curves.
